By dictionary.com definition, an engineer is a person trained and skilled in the design, construction, and use of engines or machines, or in any of the various branches of engineering : a mechanical engineer; a civil engineer; a software engineer.
Personally, I think, any person, who thinks about doing things differently and brings about innovation and change is an engineer.
And by that definition, everyone from Steve Jobs, a college dropout, who was the first one to think about a phone without the keypad and then the world followed to Dadaji Ramaji Khobragade, a poor farmer from Nanded village in Maharashtra, who developed a highly successful rice variety called HMT which yielded 80% more rice than the conventional variety is an engineer. These people, think of an innovative idea, create a blueprint , implement their idea and make the world a better place to live in.
Today, India produces over 1.5 million engineers a year, statistically and therefore may be, we have started taking them for granted.
But imagine life without an engineer/innovator/inventor. We would still be living in the dark without the light/electricity, walking or riding on bullock carts (which itself was innovation but still, we’d be moving slow) instead of the luxurious sedans and SUVs, living in tiny mud houses, instead of the comfortable, protecting bungalows, cooking on traditional firewood stove instead of the fancy cook tops (forget the ovens, juicer, grinders, mixers, coffee makers etc.), looking at the sun to know which part of the day it is instead of the wall clocks and the wrist watches, drinking impure water instead of mineral these days, drowning in floods (no dams), freezing in snow (no heaters), burning in heat (no air conditioners), as compared to being safe, secure and protected inside, wearing dhotis or tailored pants instead of the branded slim fit machine made trousers , sleeping on the floors instead of the designed for comfort, custom mattresses, talking to next door neighbours (which is good), instead of long lost high school friends via the cell phones and the internet.
Apart from dramatically changing the way we operate in our daily lives, engineers have made significant contributions in the field of:
- Medicine by inventing state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices ranging from clinical equipment to micro-implants, common imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs, regenerative tissue growth, pharmaceutical drugs and therapeutic biologicals .
- Education: E-Learning initiatives, distributing electronic study material from US to China, video recorded classroom sessions of the famous MIT professors are all an outcome of the innovative, inventive, engineering initiative. And as much as we d like to make fun of the Idea’s IIN advertisement, we all love to Google and YouTube everything new, we would like to learn.
- Transportation: Be it flight, railway or road transportation, the field of engineering and technology has contributed significantly towards the planning, functional design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods (transport).
I can go on and on about what an innovator’s contribution is to the world and how any number of engineers in the world is always going to be less.
What do you think ? Engineer or no?
